Chapter Twelve

When Emerald entered the room Wilson stopped whining. He’d obviously been worried about Amy, and with Emerald there, he settled back down to sleep.

“Here’s what I want you to do,” Emerald flipped the night lamp on low. “I want you to stare at this light and listen to my voice. Can you do that?”

“Yes.” Amy’s eyes focused on the soft glow from the lampshade.

“Amy, you’re walking down a long hallway. There are doors on either side of you. Do you see them?”

“No…yes. Yes, I see them.” Her voice was relaxing and she gradually began to feel sleepy. Emerald’s soothing voice made every muscle soften; constantly reassuring her she was safe.

“Walk very slowly down the hallway, Amy, and when you see a door you want to enter, go in the door and tell me what you see.”

Amy walked down the silent, dimly lit hallway and came to a door that seemed to want her to open it. “I’m opening a door.”

“Good girl. Now, tell me what you see.”

“I see the man from my dream standing at the kitchen sink, and a little girl is sitting at the table. I’m in the kitchen at my old house.”

“That’s very good Amy, very good. I want you to look at the little girl. Who is she? Do you recognize her?”

Amy looked closely at the little girl and gasped. “She’s…she’s me. It’s me at the table, when I was little.”

“Very good, Amy. Now go to the little girl and pick her up.”

“But she’s stone, hard and cold. So is the man. The room is gray and so are the people, except me. I’m not gray.”

“Go to the child and touch her, she will come to you.”

Just as Emerald said, when Amy touched the child, the little girl was suddenly in her arms with both arms around her neck and small childlike legs around her waist. She told Emerald what had happened.

“Amy, this is the little girl that lives inside of you, the one who is still afraid. I want you to tell her that you will never allow anyone, ever, to hurt her again. Tell her that and then tell her you are going to come and visit her often; that you are going to keep her safe.”

Amy did as Emerald said and inside her, she could feel a warmth and hope. The child held on tightly.

“She doesn’t want me to go.”

“Tell the child you will come back often. That she doesn’t need to be afraid anymore.”

Amy did and suddenly she was no longer in the kitchen.

“I’m in the hallway again. The door is closed.” Amy was breathing softly now, her eyes closed.

Emerald began, “I’m going to count backwards from five to one and when I get to one you will be safely in your bed with me sitting beside you. Ready?”

“Ready.”

“Five, four, three, two, one.” Each word was spoken slowly, deliberately.

Amy gradually opened her eyes and let them adjust to the low light in the room.

“That was…amazing.” Amy sat up slowly and leaned back against the headboard.
